International and Military Shipping

Need to send baby shower gifts to your daughter living in Italy? Or how about sending a military serviceman a care package? Customs forms and commercial invoices can be complicated and challenging. No package will be delivered unless the documents are correctly completed. At Cedar Rapids Pak Mail, we simplify the process by completing the forms for you and making international shipping as easy as mailing a letter.

Customs forms aren't the only headache when shipping internationally. There are specific and varying item restrictions for sending your package overseas. Reading a list of rules and regulations can be overwhelming. If the rules are not followed, it could mean long delays in delivery. Check out the list below for a few general but helpful pointers.

  1. Batteries must be removed because electronic devices can inadvertently go off while in transit. They just don't want things ticking, vibrating, or making any kind of noise like clocks or radios. Other prohibited items include hazardous or flammable material, including cologne, aerosol cans, firearms, furs, perishables, plants, tobacco, and liquor to name a few.
  2. Avoid sending anything that will melt such as chocolates. Also, be cautions about sending very fragile items. The military shipping process can involve many transfers and rough handling. Foreign postal and carrier services and customs offices may not have the equipment or techniques to protect delicate packages. Remember that pornographic material is illegal in some countries and this may include catalogs and magazines with swim suits or lingerie
  3. International shipping can be expensive. Surface shipping for small packages is no longer an option. Distance, weight and size all contribute to cost.  Small, light weight packages less than 4 pounds will usually be most economical to send to foreign addresses.
  4. Different countries have varying import restrictions. Before you shop, check on the prohibitions for the country in question.
  5. Postal packages to APO and FPO addresses are sent through military post offices in the U.S. Therefore they can be sent at domestic rates. However, they still require customs forms and must comply with customs rules and regulations for the country where the unit is serving. Other carriers such as FedEx and DHL may deliver to some foreign bases, but special information is required. Consult with us before making plans for non postal services to overseas military installations.
  6. We will complete the customs forms for you, but we need a list of the contents and values. We will be glad to provide worksheets ahead of time so you can record as you plan what to send.
